From the Sky: Fabrics and Metals

Final Illustration

This project was the final in a fabrics representation class, where we culminated our painting skills into a final drawing that expressed our understanding of fabrics. For this illustration, I mainly focused on leather/plastic (jacket), synthetic material (shirt), and metal (prosthetic leg).

  • From the references, I compiled an outfit for my character, choosing darker clothing that is reflective to increase its contrast with highlights, as well as the prosthetic's metallic texture.

  • While I did use the 3D model in Clip Studio Paint as a reference for my posing, I chose to exaggerate the size of the hand to enhance the depth perception (increase the amount of space between the hand in the foreground and rest of the body in the midground).

  • To further this effect, the hair and leg gets larger as they are closer to the viewer, like the hand does. This adds to the line of motion, from the hair to the face/hand, then to the leg.

  • Next, for the shirt, I decided to get rid of the ribbons as they might've become too much, visually, losing emphasis as its looser nature would lead the viewer's eyes elsewhere.

  • For color, I mainly followed my reference images, especially with the first prosthetic leg ref. It helped me gain a better sense of "hidden" colors within the shadows, like the brighter blues and peach color in the highlights, and the green in the shadows. This helped me make the metal in my own prosthetic leg drawing look more vibrant.

  • Lastly, I added a multiple and add-glow layer to strengthen the back-lighting of the piece, making clear where the light source is, as well as creating stronger contrast between the character and background.
