Movie Poster Illustration

An illustrated poster for an imagined movie. I wanted to give it an animated film look, and was inspired by some of Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away promotional posters. I aimed for a vibrant and surreal atmosphere that drew the viewer's eyes to the main subject, then to the smaller details.

The poster mainly focuses on the contrast between the bright earth's sky, with the darker sky's water. I needed to fill in the background so it wasn't empty, so I went with wavelike patterns, outlined with a pencil brush to emulate a gold leaf texture. It adds to the surrealism, and the fluid shapes in the far background was also meant for that magical feeling. Originally, it was from a picture of gold foil, that was then warped and had clipping layers that modified the colors for a more subtle look as to not overpower the main subjects in front.

The original sketch: I used CSP's 3D model to position the character mainly to help me with the angle of the face, so I got the eye, nose, and mouth position correct. The lines of the model also helped me determine where the hair and clothing would flow. I didn't sketch out the waves at this point because I wasn't yet sure what to include for the background. In previous works, I had used a lot of fog, so that actually prompted me to do fog-like waves. And since I used the same pencil brush to draw it that I usually use for sketching, I ended up directly drawing the waves' outline rather than sketching it out.
